As the name suggests the club is a recent amalgamation of two clubs Shifnal Chess Club and Telford Chess Club and therefore has two branches

Club

If you've been down the club recently, as most of you have, you'll have noticed an influx of new players, namely:

Darren Terry, Jamie Beddoes, Brian Malone, Neil Donaldson, Sean Donaldson,

We have Stefan to thank. Well done, brilliant job.

Brian has been 'blooded', with a win against Shrews Juniors. So has Neil, with a hard-fought game for Wellington against Graham Shepherd.

Sean and Tom are teenagers, keen to learn the game.

With the chess season nearing its close, we can revive our efforts to develop the club. Stefan aims to set up a youth team and I'll support him in this.

I'd also like to pursue the idea of creating a Games Centre at the Nedge, adding games like GO.

IAIN

The leagues have now ended for the winter season, more or less successfully. But there's no need not to come down to the club, just because there's no match on.  We seem to be getting new members all the time - another two fresh faces last night, who could both make very useful contributions to the club in the future.  We do need more of the B and C team members to come along to give them a more even contest.

So we've arranged various things which may be of interest:-

  • We're reviving the quickplay evenings we ran pretty successfully last summer.  The first one will be next Wednesday 9th April.  Format same as before, i.e. 6-round Swiss, time limits (if I remember rightly) 12 minutes for under 100s, 10 mins for 101 - 125, 8 minutes for 126 - 150 and 6 mins thereafter, entry fee £2 which will all go on prizes.
  • I've had the entry forms for the Wolverhampton Summer League.  There wasn't a lot of enthusiasm last year, so I'm asking now, who's interested in taking part?  Likely to be about half a dozen matches, give or take, during May to July.  I'm only going to enter ateam if I know there's sufficient support for it, and I'll only know that if you tell me.  So please reply by this Sunday.  If you don't, I'll assume you're not interested.
  • I've also had a flier for the Wolverhampton Team Lightning Tournament, to be held at Wolv'ton Chess Club, W'ton West End Working Men's Club, Merridale St. West, W'ton on Thursday 24th April at 7.15 prompt, entry fee £1.50 each.  Again, please let me know by this Sunday if you're interested.
  • Then there'll be Derrick Powell's inimitable Summer KO and Cox Trophies to come.  I haven't had any details yet, but I'll keep you posted.

The very new members may well be wondering what all this means.  If so, don't worry - just keep coming along on Wednesday nights.

Richard
